On 13 May 2016, DIN hosted the Joint ISO-IEC-ITU Workshop on the "Internet of Things" in Berlin. Nearly 80 international experts met for intensive discussions with their colleagues. The increasing convergence of technologies is forcing a greater networking of the three international standards organizations. Many standards bodies have already formed mutual "liaisons".

The "Internet of Things (IoT)" refers to the networking of physical objects which have the connectivity that enables them to collect and exchange data, forming a kind of physical "internet". It extends to every aspect of our professional and private lives, and is a key aspect of trending fields such as Industry 4.0 and smart cities.

Workshop participants gained insight into current and future developments at ISO, IEC and ITU in this area. After a general introduction to ISO, IEC, ITU and JTC 1, the ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee on Information Technology, specific standards projects in various sectors were presented and discussed. Topics included:

  • Smart Energy
  • Smart Cities
  • Industry 4.0 / Smart Manufacturing
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Wearables

At DIN, IoT projects are dealt with in DIN's Standards Committee on Information Technology and Applications (NIA).
